The example of this entrepreneur giving away too much information was that they kept getting inquiries and questions from “potential” clients and follow-ups, with no clear closing.
Answering emails about architecture or web design without booking a call or consultation, and going for 10 emails back and forward, is not that’s giving away too much information for free.
What you could do instead is:
Answer the first question and provide a link to book a free and short discovery call, and discuss all other details during the call. During this call, you can identify if this is your ideal client and if they are actually interested in your services or your knowledge only.
But what if you want to share information for free?
Here are a couple of things you can do.
Create case studies — share all the details around your previous projects. Showcase the problem you solved, the issues you faced, and the process you had with that particular project. You could also mention a bit about who the users are (if you are ux designer yourself), some of your responsibilities, constraints and last but not least the results! Before and after snapshots can really help a potential client make a decision.
Start your blog — just like me, start sharing useful information that could potentially help your future clients and also bring them closer to working with you. While you share information you have learned, or try to inform an audience about a topic, those keywords you are using will be associated with your website.
Host webinars — here is where most of 15k+ influencers bag their clients. They pick a title that solves a problem or relieves a pain point. And without even revealing any actionable steps (which can be annoying), they sell their courses, programs or consulting. Now, if you feel confident in your offer, you can try this out.
Publish your research — have you conducted your own research on a topic that is valuable and interesting? Share it with your audience!
Speak at conferences — this is on a bigger scale, but if someone wants to engage on a deeper level with you, pitch yourself as a panel guest, and talk to peers and potential clients there.
Create a podcast episode or video breakdown — someone wants to know how to do XYZ? Show them and make a video about it! Use the idea as part of your content bank.
So don’t be afraid to share information with the world. Just make sure it's on your terms.
After your first free consultation, you can also mention your pricing and what is included. Clients who respect your craft will be more than happy to pay for your insights.
