“I Want To Start My Own Business. But I Don’t Know How.” Does It Resonate?

April 15, 2025

If you have been thinking about it, most likely the universe is constantly showing some signs. Like this story, for example.

What should you do next? — illustration provided from Icons8 Figma plugin.

Nice to meet you. ☺️ My name is Nikoleta, and I am a self-employed business owner who is still figuring lots of things out. While doing that and working with design and web development clients, I also happen to help other designers and future entrepreneurs figure out steps and processes that I did myself.

I was feeling lost and demotivated, scared even to dream of having my own business. Let alone starting it in a foreign country. But you know what happened? I asked for help, learned from others, attended numerous business workshops, sent an embarrassing amount of emails to learn as much as I could because I was afraid to make a mistake. You don't have to go through all that to succeed. Here is what you can do instead.

So if you feel lost in:

  • The sea of information about starting a business
  • Becoming a freelancer
  • Finding and securing clients
  • How to polish your design process
  • How to define your client process
  • How to figure out what my unique selling point is

I might be able to help with that! For the past couple of months and weeks, I have been putting a sales page together and developing this new service that I decided to name Strategic Business Mentoring.

I will soon create a sales page for designers only, too. Will probably be named Strategic Design Mentoring.

Why the need to separate them?

Great question!

Well, as you can see, the one covering business goes as deep as:

  • Why do you want to start your business?
  • What are your goals, motivations and vision for this?
  • Have you thought of who your clients are?
  • What about your services?
  • Maybe how certain things are done legally in your country when it comes to having a business?
  • And more.

And on the other side we have:

  • Do you have a design background?
  • Do you understand and use the basic design principles?
  • What tools are you going to use?
  • What is your client process?
  • How does your design/development process look?
  • How do you talk during discovery calls?
  • What kind of style of communication do you use?
  • And more.

So the two client or user types are different. Their needs are different. Their struggles, questions and goals are different too.

Ok, and how do you help them?

So far, when mentoring, I have found that weekly messaging support and an hour video call a week to be quite productive with my mentees.

During the week, I check in on them and their progress, they ask questions, I provide feedback or advice, and the next week we meet, we work on specific points we have established from the previous meeting.

I take learning, teaching and mentoring quite seriously. I highly respect dedication and professionalism when I see them. And I am more than happy to go the extra mile for my mentees so they can succeed faster.
