On February 21st, this template journey began with an idea that wouldn’t leave my mind. Here is what ultimately happened.
Side note: This is a reminder story for myself.
Good things take time. Side projects even more. 😅 So here is the story of how my second website template took me less than my first one and what I have learned along the way.
By less time, I mean exactly 4 months, 20 days or a total of 140 days. From which I have spent approximately 4 hours a week, twice a week. Sometimes more, depending on what I was troubleshooting.
During this process, I also documented my learnings and journey by creating Webflow tutorials based on the Fit Warrior template.
Here are the tutorials:
Become a Webflow creator first. In this way, you will have one of the forms completed, and you can focus on following the guidelines and building your template.
Do some research on the templates available in the categories you want to publish yours in. Try to think of layouts and features that will be beneficial for the users and business owners, which are also missing in some templates.
I highly recommend you go over every single article in this Submission Guidelines article, since your request will be judged based on how many of them you meet.
One of the most important sections of these guidelines is the Site Settings. Before you start building your template, make sure you read the guidelines beforehand.
And here is why:
Is this a one-page or multi-page static site?
One page
Multi page
Multi-layout (3+ layouts with 3+ pages)
Very important note: custom code is not allowed
Custom code (in site settings, in embeds, in page settings) is not allowed in Templates, except for:
1. Font smoothing in the project settings — Example: {-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; -moz-osx-font-smoothing: grayscale;}
2. No-index code in the Licensing and Changelog pages: <meta name=”robots” content=”noindex”>
3. SVG’s — If you’re using SVG’s code it is required to add an Instructions page to the template with clear guidelines about how to use it.
If you want to go the extra mile, you can read this older article on the topic that mentions the profit ratio of being a webflow template creator.
“Webflow templates designer program requires a commitment to producing new templates on a regular basis, so that your commission would be 80%. If you stop creating templates, your earning commission will drop to 60%.”
After one day of submission issues with the link, I managed to successfully submit the Fit Warrior website template the day after. Got a reply the day after with feedback on reviewing and improving the layout design quality and graphic design before resubmission.
The support team also provided another article to follow for the evaluation criteria:
webflow.com
Since I have a Wix Studio Foundations course editing scheduled as well, alongside client meetings, I will review the feedback from the support team and will evaluate whether I will apply the adjustments or move on with other projects.
Another option is to sell the Fit Warrior template privately.
For anyone interested in reviewing the template, you can check it out here.
